SEO is all about getting traffic to your website through organic. Every search engine has its own SEO rules. As Google occupies 80% of market share, most of the organic traffic is driven from google search engine. The decent 2nd place was occupied by Yahoo and Bing. Now let’s take a look at the definition of SEO.

Definition:

According to the wikipedia, Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results—often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results.

In short “SEO is a process of getting result or traffic through organic”

Which Search Engine actually works to drive traffic to your website?

Foolish Question? No. not at all. Actually well questioned. I have a friend called Wang Shu from China. I met her on Local train at Mumbai back in 2015. Got a good interaction with her & became good friends. She had a specialization on Search Engine Optimization. When I entered into the world of Digital Marketing in the year 2016, I thought She would help me with her specialization. After an hour Skype conversation between us, I realized that she is working on a different Search Engine called Baidu which is used by 76 % of China Population. I’m here in India working on the Google Search Engine which is used by 95% of Indians.

Every Country has it’s own search engine. Russia is having Yandex share of 62% where google occupies a decent 2nd place with 26 %. Do you believe that Google doesn’t hold market share in South Korea? Yes True. There is no footprint of Google in South Korea because they use Naver and Daum Search engines. 73% of South Korea marketer occupied by Naver Search Engine and Daum holds just 18%.

Good Question to ask:

Yes. It was a good question to ask. With these Stats and percentages, I justified my statement that it was well questioned. Whatever the Search engines, 80% of market share all over the world was occupied by Google like a Boss. If you are doing SEO you need to concentrate and understand the Google Search engine Rules and Algorithm. Coming to the actual answer to the question. Undoubtedly Google drives most of the traffic to the websites.

Beginners Guide to SEO (Part – 1 )

Now let’s drive towards the professional road of Beginners guide to SEO. Feel free to jump into any of the topics which grabs your attention first.

Overview of SEO:

When it comes to SEO, it’s natural to feel lost, confused and even frustrated. Because it is SEO. A very common problem for beginners is to get confused between the terminologies like No follow, Do follow, Indexing, Crawling. If you are one in them, Congratulation. you landed on the right page. Let me take an opportunity to clear these basic doubts from your brain.

No Follow:

No Follow is the link attribute which says not to follow this link to Google Crawl. Google Bot usually crawls all the links on the website. But if the particular link has No-Follow attribute, it doesn’t pass the link juice. Only humans can follow the links.

Example:

<a href=”http://www.lircdigital.com/”> LIRC Digital </a> ( Normal Link of LIRC Digital which can be followed by both Human and Google bot. because there is no attribute like “no follow” in this link )

<a href=”http://www.lircdigital.com/” rel=”no follow”> LIRC Digital </a> ( Link which has No Follow Link which is followed by only Human. Google Bot cannot go through this link because of “no follow” attribute)

Above I have given you the two links. 1st one is the Normal Link of this blog which doesn’t have No Follow link attribute. Google bot has access to crawl this link.

But the 2nd one has the rel=”no follow” HTML Attribute, which is not allowed to crawl by google bot. Only humans can access Link. This link doesn’t pass the link juice.

Do Follow:

Do Follow is the link attribute which says follow this link to Google Bot. By default, all links which we are placing on our website is a do follow the link. No need to mention separately by adding rel=”do follow”.  It passes the link juice. Both humans and Google Bot have access to follow the link.

Example:

<a href=”http://www.lircdigital.com/”> LIRC Digital </a>

As I said in the definition, all links by default is a Do Follow links.

I don’t want to throw you in a confused world by giving a big definition for Indexing and Crawling. Let me finish it in a line with simple words that everyone can understand.

Crawling:

Crawling is a process where google bot visits your website for tracking all the links on your web page.

Indexing:

Indexing is Showing the results in the Google Search Page. This generally happens after Google Bot crawls all the links on your website.

How does Search Engine Works?

Well. to know about SEO, we all should know about the working process of Search Engine. Because it plays an important role in framing content according to it. Search Engine works on different Algorithms. They have a bot AKA (As known as) Crawler, Spiders.

Search Engine has become smarter over the period. I have seen a lot of changes happened in the last 3 years of time in SEO. Am trying to explain to you how a search engine displays your results when you type a keyword in the search bar.

A process of searching a database and internet sites for the documents containing the keywords which was specified by the user.

Do every search engine out there follows the same process? Undoubtedly YES!! Every search engine follows the same process to display the result that the user expecting. Different search engines have different bots. Some of them are,

  1. Google  —->  Googlebot
  2. Bing       —->  Bingbot
  3. MSN      —->  MSNbot
  4. Yahoo   —->  Yahoo_Slurp

Different bot names but the process are the same.

How Search Engine Works

Working process of Search Engine:

For easy understanding to beginners, I summarized in 3 important steps.

Let’s go brief into each Step

Crawling:

As I already said before, it is a process, where bot visits our website for tracking the links we displayed on all web pages of our website.

When the bot entered into our website, It crawls all the pages goes to each and every link and collects the data from your website and sends back to their server. In this process, it collects all the keywords that you have given to the website or on the webpage.

Crawling

When the crawl visits our web page, it takes photo/copy of the page called ScreenShot. There is one more concept called cache data which is google bot leaves their time and date of their visit to our website. you can check this by typing Cache: Your Website URL and hit Enter Button

Example:
cache:www.lircdigital.com
Enter

This is how it appears after hitting the Enter Button

Crawl Details

Indexing:

As we discussed before, Indexing is a process of Showing the results in the Google Search Page. This generally happens after Google Bot crawls all the links on our website.

The process of creating the index for all the fetched web page and keeping them into the giant Data Base from where it can be retrieved later. Snapshot collected by the crawler will be saved in his database which is used to show the page result on the SERP.

Database for Indexing

Let me explain to you how this indexing works after crawling. For example, my keyword for this blog post is a Beginners guide to SEO. When I send this blog post for the crawl, Google bot collect this keyword and sends back to his server where the main data was collected from the giant Data Base.

One of the users texted Beginners guide to SEO in the search bar. Google pulls all the data from the giant database which was collected by his bot to the Search Engine Ranking Page (SERP) and displays the relevant results. If my blog post got ranked, Probably you are reading this blog.

Displaying Results

Here come the final Step and the most complex process of all. Search Engine has a database of billion pages from the internet. Each page is talking about the different keyword. Search engine algorithm should decide which page to rank First Second Third and so on…

There are nearly 210 ranking factors The webpage which satisfies all the factors get rank in the 1st page of Google. when the user types his query or keyword in the search bar, Different algorithm triggers and pulls the best and relevant data to the SERP.

Giant-DataBase

After all these 3 steps we will get the result displayed on the Google 1st page. It is all happens just in a fraction of seconds. See how much process it carries. but when it comes to Google, the process is just happening in seconds and that’s the reason why it is the most loved search engine among all others.

Why do I Give importance to How does the search engine work?

At the beginning of my blogging career, I used to get confused about how does it really works and what are the factors helping it to work. In this world of internet, we can find it simply by googling it. But it became really hard for me to find the perfect guide. Finally, out of my experience, I understood everything and helping you not to get struggle and waste your time on this.

That’s the end of Part 1 in Beginners guide to SEO. Do you know there is 34 On page factors which help you to get ranking? Let me continue the surprise in the next part. Don’t try to search on Google. you are not going to find it anyway

Stay Tuned.
